At a family brunch this morning, my brother-in-law asked me if I was going to write a blog post about Father’s Day. My response, “I hadn’t really thought about it.” But I took the hint. And rightfully so because it’s the one day a year we get to celebrate the men in our lives and all they do for us. While it shouldn’t take a formal holiday to recognize these efforts, I realize that is perhaps the biggest compliment. My husband is such a part of the daily grind that sometimes I take it for granted. As he said, “You don’t have to do anything special. Every day is Father’s Day.” And it is. Every day my husband helps get the kids ready for school, doing the drop off and/or pick up, helping with baths, bedtime, and of course, playtime. I don’t think anything of asking him to watch the kids if I want a night out with the girls and know they are in good hands. I feel grateful that my husband plays a central role in raising our children and that he is truly my partner. While he can’t change a flat tire, he can change a diaper like a champ. And I can say the same for most of the men in my life: my brother, brother-in-law, my friends’ husbands, and of course, my dad.
I recently saw an ad from Sears titled “Not a Superhero,” a tie in with the movie Man of Steel. It’s narrated by a little boy that talks about how while his dad doesn’t have heat vision (image of dad manning the grill), can’t save the universe (carrying a sleeping child upstairs), and doesn’t have super human strength (image of dad cradling a baby), he’s still super. I think that statement sums it up best.
Dads are super because of all of the little things they do, which add up to something big.
So here’s to all of the dads out there—you are superheroes in our eyes.
